Squale Matic Satin Orange

The Squale brand was created in Switzerland by the von Büren family in the 1950s. The aim was to create diving watches that were reliable, solid and of very good quality. Almost 70 years later, this objective has not changed, and Squale continues to produce diving watches that are unanimously recognized.

Today I’m reviewing the Squale Matic Satin Orange, a model whose design pays tribute to the first divers of the brand, while bringing a contemporary touch, especially thanks to a diameter of 44mm.

The specs

  • Width: 44mm
  • Glass: domed sapphire crystal with AR coating
  • Material: Stainless steel with satin finishing
  • Movement: Sellita SW200-1 auto
  • Uni-directional bezel
  • Screw-in crown and caseback
  • SuperLuminova
  • Water resistance 600m / 60ATM

The case

The Squalematic 60ATM features well-known Squale traits like the unique and highly distinctive “von Büren” case shape with a signed screw-down crown at the four o’clock position. It is made of SS 316L with satin finishing. The lugs are curved for greater comfort on the wrist, and they are chamfered. The crown is slightly recessed and thus well protected against unwanted impact.

The wide bezel is black between 9am and 3am, and orange on the other half. A point of lume at noon allows a use even in the dark. It rotates uni-directionally with 120 clicks.

The glass is made of sapphire crystal. It is domed and treated anti-reflection, allowing an excellent legibility regardless of the orientation of the watch. It also offers bluish reflections that I like a lot 🙂

The dial

The black dial has a date window at 3 o’clock. The tip of the applied indexes is covered with SuperLuminova and allows an efficient reading of the time, even in the dark, especially in addition to the large hands.

The movement

The movement used by Squale is the classic yet robust Sellita SW200-1. This is a reliable movement with an interesting price/quality ratio.

The straps

There are several options, I will talk about the mesh and the rubber.

The mesh is heavy and a bit stiff, and I must say that I have already lost some hair on my wrist since I use it:) It gives however a fantastic style and a nice impression of solidity.
The rubber is tropical style. It is extremely soft and comfortable, without being a dust magnet. I’d dare to say it’s one of the most comfortable I’ve ever worn!

Conclusion

On its rubber, it’s the watch I’ve worn the most over the last few weeks, (worn day and night). The comfort is really very good, the legibility is perfect and I really appreciate the style of this watch, especially thanks to its domed glass.
