Tockr Air Defender Chronograph

People are sometimes looking for very specific watches in terms of size, dial color, WR,… Some time ago I have started to look for an automatic panda chronograph that would be around 44mm large and be at least 100m WR. Believe me, it wasn’t easy to find a matching piece that even combines a strong visual identity and a top quality ! Here’s the Tockr Air Defender Chronograph. Tockr is an american brand with Swiss made quality, offering watches with a unique design at an affordable price. Well that’s what they say, now let’s see how accurate it is 🙂

A Wonderful panda dial

Watch specs:

  • Power Reserve: 40-42 hours

  • Case Back: Sapphire crystal display back, revealing skeletonized rotor
  • Strap: Interchangeable hand-stitched calf leather
  • Clasp: Pin buckle clasp in brushed Stainless Steel 316L

The specs are good, they match exactly what I was looking for !

The watch comes in a solid green cardboard, revealing a beautiful wooden box with a sliding cover. It feels ‘premium’ even before seeing the watch ! Inside the box, with the watch, is a brushed aluminium warranty card in which you’ll find a USB stick with the user manual.

Now the watch itself. If you have a small wrist, the 45mm case will definitly look BIG. That’s a matter of personal taste, but I have to admit that it wasn’t a concern for my 20cm wrist 🙂 Even if the case is large, the very short and curved lugs make it sit very well on my wrist ! The case alternates brushed and polished finishes. The regular crown is located at 3, and the 2 pushers for the chrono at 2 and 4. Another crown is located at 10 to action the inner bezel. That’s not a common feature on a chronograph, but a nice-to-have !

The flat sapphire glass is efficiently AR coated, protecting a beautiful panda dial. As often with panda dials, the legibility isn’t always very good, meaning you can’t always tell the time at a glance and may need to look at it for another second. I honestly don’t mind, when you get a panda chronograph you don’t expect the same as you would from a clean diver’s dial. The flieger-type hands are however marked with a black contrast at their tip, enhancing both the look and the legibility. The dial also shows the usual day/date at 3. The 3D Indices and the hands are covered with lume. It’s not a divewatch, the lume might even be a bit weak, but it still works.

The watch runs the renown ETA 7750 movement. It’s both robust and accurate, making it one of the best options when it comes to “Swiss made” chronograph movements at an affordable price. It’s even visible thanks to the sapphire caseback display, showing the beautiful skeletonized rotor.

Apart from the calf leather bracelet on this one, you can also choose to get a SS bracelet or another leather strap made by Hix. The one I went with is quite comfortable, I just wish there was a deploying clasp that would have felt more ‘premium’ IMHO.

I’ll finish this review by underlining the great quality of both the box and the watch. Tockr made a great job here ! The price may still be a bit excessive, but I guess top notch components and unique look come with a price 🙂
