Esotheric Bathyal

When I first saw the pictures of the Esoteric Bathyal, I was happy to see a new brand launching a watch that’s not “just another sub-like” and already has a strong identity !

Here are the specs :
Case: 316L Stainless Steel
Movement: Miyota 9015, regulated
Bezel: 120-click uni-directional
Case Diameter: 44mm (excluding crown), Case Thickness: 14.0mm, Lug-To-Lug: 48mm, Lug Width: 22mm
Water Resistance: 60 ATM
Crystal: Sapphire
Accessories: fitted stainless bracelet and hand-made leather strap

FYI the one I’m reviewing is a proto. It’s not any different from the production model (only the Oscuro version is) but it didn’t came with the box and the leather strap, so I won’t describe them here.

We have here a wonderful quirky 70s case, alternating polished and brushed finishes. The stainless steel uni-directional bezel is marked with an inner black-painted line and can be handled quite well. A 44mm case can wear large but this one really doesn’t, thanks to both its short (almost non-existent) lugs and its specific shape. It’s truly one of the most comfy watch I have been able to test !

The sapphire glass is literally popping out of the case! It doesn’t create any distorsion when reading the time but really takes part in the identity of the timepiece. It’s of course AR coated.
The dial gives the final touch to the design. First of all sandwich dials are not the most common ones, but the water-drop shaped indices at 6-9-12 have really triggered a ‘wow effect’ when I first saw this piece ! They are glowing in the dark, making it easy to read the time even after several hours without light. The date at 3′ is written in a light pastel red, like the watch name/version on the dial: Bathyal Azul.

This proto came on a SS bracelet with a signed clasp. It’s heavy but solid and still wears comfortable.
The movement chosen is the well-known Miyota 9015. The 9* series from Miyota are very reliable movements, both robust and accurate.
The Esoteric Bathyal was a very good surprise to me ! It’s well made and has a true identity, which is very promising for a new brand ! I wish Shane Snider and his associate Christian Champion the best, the Bathyal is really worth the shot !

The Bathyal was launched the 05/03 on https://esotericwatches.com/ in 4 color-ways, each one limited to 100 pieces.
The pre-order special price is 599$ for a limited time only ! Delivery is expected for next month.
